What is sustainable and honest design? Discussion

What is sustainable and honest design? Discussion
Our relationship with design is often instinctive: our eyes rest on a form, move on, then return to the design to further examine. The object speaks to us – a dialogue begins, gradually revealing the harmony of its details, the quality of its surface, and the precision of its proportions. Just as a novice art collector first feels and only later learns to understand what makes a work of art special, so too can the design enthusiast learn to recognise why something appears authentic or imitates craftsmanship without real substance.

As Hungarian poet Ágnes Nemes Nagy once wrote: “Objects bear messages […] gods dwell in things and send us signs.”
Objects thus embody not only form and material, but also intention, awareness, and human quality.

The discussion will explore questions such as:

– how to choose objects for our homes,
– what makes good design truly good,
– why it matters what kinds of objects surround us,
– what “honest design” really means, and
– why a design object may cost more, yet hold far greater value than a mass-produced item.

The goal is to help participants not only understand but also learn to “read” objects – to recognize the care, meaning, and timelessness that make them truly human and lovable.
