Plydesign is a winner of this year's iF DESIGN AWARD, the world-renowned design prize: FRIGATE chair family won in the Product discipline in the Public/Retail category. Each year, the world's oldest independent design organization, Hannover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, organizes the iF DESIGN AWARD.
The 98-member jury, made up of independent experts from all over the world, have decided to honor the FRIGATE chair family with the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021. The competition was intense: almost 10,000 entries were submitted from 52 countries in hopes of receiving the seal of quality.
In our digital era, it is more important than ever to focus not only on the software (lifelong learning, self-development) but also on the hardware (our bodily needs). Most of our time awake is spent seated, which causes considerable damage to our health. FRIGATE's mission is to spread quality seating for a broad audience by achieving high ergonomic, sustainable, economic, and aesthetic standards through manufacturing innovation. The professionalism of the manufacturer partner, Licit Ltd. paired with András Kerékgyártó's responsible design attitude have created such an inspiring synergy which resulted in the FRIGATE chair family.
FRIGATE's novelty resides in the manufacturing innovation where conventional molded plywood and 3D-Veneer technology were applied. Compared to peer chairs on the market, created entirely by 3D-Veneer technology, FRIGATE offers an affordable solution with the same high quality and standards. The unique mixture of the warmth of wood, curved edges, and efficient lumbar support is available for a better price point than ever before due to the clever combination of conventional and 3D-Veneer technology. Therefore, FRIGATE makes accessible such a package that has not been attainable before: it contributes significantly to the democratization of quality seating to enhance people's wellbeing.
FRIGATE chair family shows how to achieve ergonomic, sustainable, economic, and aesthetic quality through technological innovation in manufacturing.
The product family represents a novel application of the 3D-Veneer developed by the German Danzer company which enables an affordable production by the two-piece construction of the shell, as only the backrest requires a 3D-veneer, the seat is made with conventional methods: this way, the same ergonomic benefits are available to many more people. The three-dimensional backrest provides appropriate lumbar support; the front and top edges are bent away from the occupant's body so as not to cut into it.
A rich variety of types: the shells and legs (with swivel base and castors, stacking, height-adjustable) are compatible with each other, as well as are held to one another by 4 or 8 screws and are easily detachable for economical transport The adequate stability, safety, and surface resistance certificates guarantee to withstand the potential wear and tear and the course of time. Plydesign uses only FSC certified wood, water-based surface treatment, and OEKO-TEX® and EU Ecolabel certified textiles. The chairs come disassembled to lower ecological footprint.
"We are overwhelmed by the fact that we were granted such a prestigious award after only seven years in business. Years of hard work and dedication towards our goal to create outstanding design products and build up a Hungarian furniture label conveying our holistic design approach has received positive feedback that we are on the right track. We feel obliged to continue our work and even expand it by giving the next generation of young designers a new professional opportunity. Therefore, we will launch PLY DESIGN HOUSE to gather the best design ideas of Hungarian young creators and show their prowess. We will soon publish the open call’s details on our online platforms." said Tamás Babits, founder and CEO of Plydesign.
